How does the lasik technique work ?

Lasik : The 3-step procedure

Lasik is performed under local anesthesia (anesthetic drops). This refractive surgery procedure concerns only the cornea and can correct a wide range of myopias, hyperopias, and astigmatisms. Lasik comprises 3 key stages:

  • The first stage involves creating a superficial flap on the surface of the cornea.
  • The flap is lifted to expose the stroma, which is reshaped by the Excimer laser.
  • The flap is then repositioned to cover the treated area.

Cutting the flap

Cutting the flap is a specific feature of Lasik, performed mainly with the femtosecond laser. No intraocular manipulation or implants are placed during the procedure. Among refractive surgery techniques, Lasik and PRK require the least direct manual intervention.
