Sleeve gastrectomy in Tunis

Sleeve gastrectomy, or gastric sleeve, is a surgical technique that has been used to treat obesity for around 20 years.

In this procedure, the surgeon removes around 75% of the stomach.

This procedure, also known as longitudinal gastrectomy or calibrated vertical gastroplasty, aims to reduce the capacity of the stomach and limit food intake, thus helping to lose weight effectively.

Scope Medical Travel offers you its expertise to make your surgery a success, and to facilitate both administrative and logistical procedures.

What is the difference between a sleeve and a bypass ?

Sleeve surgery differs from Bypass surgery in two respects :

  • Sleeve is an irreversible operation in which part of the stomach is removed, whereas in
bypass, the stomach is retained in its entirety.
  • Weight loss with sleeve surgery is based solely on reducing the amount of food ingested.
Bypass, on the other hand, combines this restriction with voluntary malabsorption of food, due to the bypass created in the digestive system.

Who should undergo sleeve surgery ?

To be eligible for sleeve surgery, patients suffering from obesity must meet several criteria:

● Their BMI must be that of morbid obesity, i.e. greater than or equal to 40.

● The patient must be between 18 and 60 years of age, as this surgery is not performed on children.

● The patient must have no medical contraindications to this procedure, such as hiatal hernia, gastro-oesophageal reflux or a long history of abdominal surgery, nor any psychological contraindications.

Procedure of the sleeve surgery

L’opération de la sleeve nécessite une phase de préparation ainsi que de suivi. Nos médecins partenaires vous garantissent un accompagnement intégral.

The surgical procedure

Every sleeve requires 6 to 12 months' pre-operative follow-up, which is crucial to the success of the operation. A multidisciplinary team (gastroenterologist, surgeon, psychologist, nutritionist, etc.) adjusts a personalized program on a monthly basis, including a new lifestyle with balanced meals and adapted physical activity. Meetings with patients who have already undergone surgery are also organized to share experiences.

Rapid weight loss

Gastric sleeve surgery is performed under general anesthesia and lasts between 1 h 30 and 2 h, barring complications. Performed under laparoscopy, part of the stomach is removed by stapling. Hospitalization lasts around two days, but can be extended to 8 days for complex cases. A two-week leave from work is generally required.

After sleeve surgery

After sleeve surgery, lifelong medical follow-up is required. The post-operative diet begins with liquids for 2-3 days, followed by blended foods, then normal, but reduced, rations. A dietician supervises this process to ensure a balanced, protein-rich diet, while avoiding soft drinks, sweets, and fried foods. Psychological follow-up is also offered to support dietary and behavioral changes.
